Hey friends!

It's been a while since I last posted on here. I'll let you in on everything that's been going on.

It has been an exciting time over here--one filled with new hardware and software that I'm still trying to figure out. Improvements to the website (including this blog) are underway (and, according to a bunch of emails I've received, badly needed!). But, like I said, I'm very excited since there are some really cool things planned for the new site...so we'll see how it turns out!

But, as always, plenty of videos to come..so I hope you'll stay tuned!

I've never agreed with all the people who say "the international community should should boycott the Beijing games,"--but I do think more thought should be given to selecting a host city...is anybody actually surprised this is happening?

I was very excited to watch the Brickyard 400, but what a terrible show. It was kind of interesting to see the different strategies teams used in the unchartered waters of repeated competition cautions in a way--but I would hardly even call it a race.

I wish they went back to the old cars. These COT ("car of tomorrow") races aren't nearly as captivating, for the most part.

The Brickyard 400 is one of the biggest races of the season, and it was turned into a glorified tire-testing session by the COT.

I recently began reading two new blogs, both of which I thought I'd share with you (and add to the roll on the right).

My friend BJ (who you may know from his co-starring roles in "Thunder Rolls: The Taco Bell Version" and "Washington Capitals: The Hockey Song") just started a funny blog about his daily dining experiences called "Lunch Abominations Made with Love." Here's the blog description from his site:

What a cool idea! "Waitin' on a Woman" is a great Brad Paisley song, originally on the "Time Well Wasted" album (which, by the way, you should definitely buy if you like country music...or oxygen). I guess the powers that be decided to release that song (or at least the video?) and add it to the new album, "5th Gear." Not that 5th Gear needs any help--I think it has already yielded four #1 singles.

Anyway, it's a great song...can't wait to see the show at the Jamboree. The video was just posted to the Brad Paisley channel. Check it out!

I was in downtown Washington on Friday afternoon when I heard the sad news. I have enjoyed having Tim Russert and Meet the Press in my home on Sundays...nobody did it better. In the age of the 24-hour news networks touting celebrity gossip and other nonsense, Tim Russert always delivered a refreshingly captivating, substantive and educational program.

I was inspired when I heard him speak, with pride, of his Jesuit education, and where he felt one could take an individual. I saw him a couple times in the concourse at Caps games...thinking about it now, I regret not saying hello and telling him I appreciate his great work--what could it have hurt?

Sundays won't be the same without him.

What a big night for the Caps!

Caps (Alex O. and Coach Boudreau) took home FIVE of the awards given out at the NHL Awards Night!

Washington is giving Alex Ovechkin the key to the city on Friday!

I'm very glad Coach Boudreau was not overlooked for the Jack Adams award. He led a historic turnaround--one that, fortunately, is now documented...metallurgically?

And stating so probably should be avoided (I mean, FIVE AWARDS!) but Nick Backstrom...

I refuse to believe there is a recession as long as Mike Milbury has secured employment.

What aspect of his career as an NHL executive leads anybody to believe he knows what he's talking about? Out of curiosity, I came across his Wikipedia entry...

He has traded away defensemen Zdeno Chara, Wade Redden, Bryan Berard, Eric Brewer, Darius Kasparaitis, and Bryan McCabe; goalies Roberto Luongo and Tommy Salo, as well as forwards Olli Jokinen, Todd Bertuzzi, Raffi Torres. Milbury has also come under fire for his draft day decisions such as choosing Rick DiPietro first overall in 2000 over Dany Heatley and Marian Gaborik; as well as his decision to include the 2001 second overall draft pick (Jason Spezza) as part of the Alexei Yashin trade.

Boy did that Yashin thing work out. And Luongo? Is he still around?

His second act as a TV analyst has hardly changed things. We understand, Mike...the guy at the end of his shift is "out of gas." We understand the concept of fatigue. Profound.

There's the famous quotation, "it's best to keep silent and be assumed an idiot than to open your mouth and remove all doubt." Milbury's mouth has been opened. Several times. It's not good TV.

NBC would be better off hiring somebody with no hockey experience whatsoever--at least their hockey failures wouldn't be so well documented.

It's Memorial Day weekend, and I've already seen dozens of motorcycles making their way for DC. I imagine I'll only see more and more as the weekend continues. I was just watching some videos in the spirit of the weekend, and thought I'd share. The Terrorists Have Lost...

So last week, I caught a baseball game at the new Nationals Park in DC. My father was going with a friend, and I tagged along. It was my first visit to the new park. It seemed pretty nice.

As we entered the stadium, the stadium staff were handing out "bobbleheads." Not being someone who enjoys carrying things around, I passed on the bobblehead. However, I noticed that dozens upon dozens of yellow-clad event security staffers were monitoring the bobblehead-dispersing process. If anyone hesitated about taking a bobblehead, a member of the security staff (some appearing more tactful than others...) would inform them they couldn't take one, or take them out of their hands saying "you can't take bobbleheads once you pass this side of the table!"

Watching this unfold, I realized: the terrorists have lost.

If a terrorist threat truly existed on the stadium, would the ballpark have dozens of security staffers governing the bobblehead table? I'm no counter-terrorism expert, but I doubt it. Anyway, I took some comfort in this scene, and thought I would share. God bless America!

Government officials take custody of a man's son...for what?? Three cheers for bureaucracy.

When I was younger (maybe 11 or 12), I used to like "Mystic" fruit drink, which came in a bottle. On a road trip, my mom went and bought what she thought was Mystic fruit drink (similar bottle and color). After having some, and reading the label, I realized it was an alcoholic cooler. So she told me to stop drinking it and I did. The situation worked out and--while it must be difficult for Michigan Child Services to comprehend--nobody had to be taken into custody!

Danica Patrick Wins!

Some folks said it would never happen, others said it was a matter of time. Congrats to Danica Patrick on her first IRL victory!

I came across this column, which raises a number of potential asterisks, but as far as I'm concerned, it's as much a win as any other race. She's been running up front (with the rest of the Andretti-Green cars), and that's how races are won. If you run up front, the wins will come. Yes, there was a fuel mileage situation involved, but fuel strategy is part of racing. Plus it wasn't as if her team was taking a gamble. They made an effort to save fuel and, in the end, it worked out.

I see the author's point...but that's racin'!

What a great atmosphere for the Caps' first playoff game in five years! I was always a big fan of the "White-Out," where all the Caps fans would wear white, but I think I may have been converted to a proponent of the "Red-Out" after tonight.

My entire section spent most of the third period on their feet--jumping, yelling and cheering on the Caps! What a great comeback effort! Hopefully the rest of the series will look like that third period.

Man...down 2-4 in the third period and winning 5-4...BELIEVE!

Anybody see today's race? Anybody else find it pretty boring? Or maybe it was just that I've been spoiled by two weekends of short track racing.

I can't make up my mind about the new car. On one hand, I don't think it has delivered on providing closer racing--I can't think of many captivating position battles from earlier today. Even Jimmie Johnson--who finished 2nd--complained about the car on tracks like Texas.

But on the other hand, the safety features on the new car helped Michael McDowell survive this horrific crash during Friday's qualifying session:

The Capitals were faced with increasingly unlikely scenarios throughout the season, but ultimately proved that hard work and believing in yourself pays off in the end. They now, deservingly, find themselves in the NHL playoffs as DIVISION CHAMPIONS!

Prior to yesterday's game, I was blasting Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" over and over. Don't laugh!!

I can't even count how many articles I read over the course of the season discrediting the Capitals' chances. "Power Rankings" throughout the season--even down the stretch--wouldn't even include the Capitals in the top 15! And, my personal favorite, those commentators who claimed that "if the Capitals' record isn't good enough to qualify for the playoffs, Alex Ovechkin shouldn't be MVP." The Caps were going to end 5 games out of first place in the conference at the end of the season (regardless of if they made the playoffs or not) after starting the season 6-14-1 and firing their head coach. They made the run under the effective guidance of Bruce Boudreau, a great team effort, including the exceptional play of Ovechkin.

The Pregnant Man

Just saw this article on the buzz surrounding "the pregnant man." Am I the only person in the world who doesn't get the hype??

So a lady has gender-altering procedure (hey, it's a free country!). The lady can still have a kid but is now, for legal purposes, a man. The lady/man has a kid. Media goes crazy with stories of how a man has a kid. MASS HYSTERIA ENSUES!!!

My favorite part of the article is how Yahoo searches for "oregon pregnant man" have increased 461% in recent weeks, begging the question--who was searching for that before??

I don't have documented proof, but I'd estimate that 100% of babies delivered in the history of the world were delivered by women (with the exception of Dateline's Chris Hanson, who is a high-tech robot from the planet "Awesome"). So, a quick note to the media: if something's giving birth to kids, it probably has a uterus.

Last night's game was incredible! The Caps didn't look too great in the second period, but played great hockey overall! Tonight, we watch the scoreboard!! Check out the Washington Post's potential playoff scenarios. The Caps need to win on Saturday, and will need some help, but hopefully their hard work will pay off with a trip to the playoffs!

Well, I'm writing this on my phone, so please pardon any double letters. I'm currently in a car heading to Las Vegas (don't worry, I'm not driving!)

I just got yelled at by a homeless guy during lunch, which was pretty interesting. Other than that, not much to report.

I saw a pair of men's jeans at this store in Santa Monica--they had tassles on them. I kinda wanted to get them just to see how hard my friend Matt would punch me.

I'll post something about Las Vegas if anything interesting happens. Though I've heard what happens there stays there...but we'll test that hypothesis.

Basketball--change the rules!

I have been affected by the "March Madness."

I don't follow basketball very closely, but I do get caught up in the excitement surrounding the NCAA tournament. Try as I might, I just can't watch basketball for more than a few minutes before I start thinking they should change the rules.

This happened again this past weekend. So please allow me to offer, once again, my plan to make basketball more compelling.

So what changes would Commissioner Remy make? Funny you should ask:

* Change/Remove/Amend the 3-point line.

Why is it like 3 feet behind the free throw line? I don't see how it's any more difficult shooting a jumpshot from a few feet behind the foul line than dribbling past three dudes to get a layup.

I think they should either get rid of it, or add more lines. Why not have half-court be a five-point line? Yes, I know, that's ridiculous....but if you're going to have a three-point line, why stop there?

* Fewer time-outs

This should definitely be changed. It's annoying to know once the crowd starts getting loud at a basketball game, a timeout will be called. That's probably because each team has like 40 timeouts a game. I say give them one or two per half. People always say it would allow teams to use momentum to build a big lead but, by that same logic, it would also allow for teams trailing late in the games to mount comebacks if they start playing well.

I feel like the joke is on the fans. Anytime the crowd gets loud and into the game--timeout! How deflating.

* No backcourt violation

Who cares? It's a free country. Let them do what they want. Plus, from where else could you shoot a 5-pointer?

* Play to 100 (or some other arbitrary figure)

I'd rather watch eye surgery than the end of a basketball game. It's so boring. Foul, free throws, foul, free throws, foul, Ron Artest punches some drunk dude, free throws, etc.

If the first team to reach 100 points won the game, you wouldn't see the silly fouling towards the end of games. It seems to me the outcome of many basketball games would be reversed if the game were 15 seconds longer/shorter--so which is the better team? Plus, the game would be tremendously compelling, knowing each team would have to keep playing and not just rely on running out the clock.

* No fouling out

If someone wants to commit a bunch of fouls, why not? The other team will get free throws. Plus, it would create an incentive for teams to find players that can actually SHOOT the ball and make their free throws if fouled. It's silly to have a sport in which some of the professional players make 50%-60% of their free throws. How embarrassing.

By eliminating the "foul-out," there would no longer be a disincentive to foul a guy who can't shoot free throws. However, there wouldn't be an increase in fouls committed, since teams would probably adapt and start better shooters and not just big fat guys that can dunk.

* In sum, a better product!

But, then again, I'm a moron and really have no idea how to play basketball. I'm probably wrong, but I would certainly watch more basketball if these changes were implemented! Let me be commissioner, March Madness!

The Eastern Conference playoff race is crazy!

It's been great to see the Caps bounce back from last weekend's disappointing outcomes, playing great hockey all week and picking up six hard-earned points. Great perseverance!

This week's thoughts:

* I still don't know how Boston has won as many games as they have. I still think they won't make the playoffs, even though they're currently tied for 6th in the conference.

* Flying under the radar, Florida's got a real great chance at making the playoffs w/ an exceptional finish.

* Seriously, though, how is Boston doing so well??

* Quintin Laing is the Caps' nominee for the Masterson Trophy this year, and deservingly so. I'm pretty sure he'd block a shot with his face if presented with the opportunity.

Nine more games to go! Two points out of 8th! Five points out of 3rd! Let's go Caps!

I'm a fan of consumer feedback and customer reviews. One of my favorite websites is Yelp.com, which is home to a spectacular community of restaurant, business and other reviews.

It seems now there is a site where you can rate your...police officer? Check out this video about this new site. My favorite quote:

"Officers who are rated face unfair maligning without any opportunity to defend themselves." Law enforcement is a noble profession, but...welcome to the internet! The information revolution will leave no stone unturned. User ratings have evolved past a simple "star" rating. Now even REVIEWS are reviewed! People frown upon the useless. I think the "he gave me a speeding ticket, I hate him!" reviews will be rated accordingly.

Uneventful Race

I tuned in about an hour or so late, but caught most of the NASCAR race in Atlanta. It seemed as if every driver was fighting a loose-handling race car all afternoon. After the race, a number of drivers were critical of the tire compound provided for the race by Goodyear. Tony Stewart was tactful, as always:

Hopefully they get the compound figured out, and the quality of racing is better than what we saw today!

Disappointing Weekend...

Four possible points, and the Caps were awarded none. And in ways that could only happen to the Caps...

Just imagine how many penalties Erskine would have gotten had he actually tripped someone!

Pittsburgh is really good. I think they might be the only Eastern Conference team that could take 4 of 7 from the top teams out West.

I can't see how Boston will make the playoffs. They seem incapable of scoring a goal which, from my understanding, is the standard by which a game's winning team determined.

It'll be a shame if the Caps don't make the playoffs. Alas, it hardly seems their fate is in only their hands at this point.

Dumb Tax

Glad they got rid of it. My friend, who owns a service station, was telling me how the car repair business had witnessed a downturn since the new taxes went into effect. Sounds like a great idea.

And thanks to the legislature for looking out for us, by allowing some non-elected authority to levy taxes on us! You're doing great work.

The Caps dropped 10 on the Bruins last night at the Verizon Center. What a fun game to watch! Here are some highlights. It was great to see them bounce back after a regulation loss to Toronto at VC on Saturday. Great effort by the Caps!

Seriously though, what a great set of pickups by George McPhee and the Capitals. We definitely seemed to need a play-making center, and we got that in Sergei Fedorov. Though I guess nobody told Brooks Laich that, judging by his four points last night...

Great to see Pettinger get a fresh start, he can play much better than he has this season.

Here's a news story on a teacher caught on tape calling her students "dumb."

As a student, I would run into some teachers who would express similar sentiments to me--granted, not as directly as this woman. I did have a few great teachers who believed in me, but I also had some who did not. It wasn't until I got to Wheeling Jesuit University when I realized "Hey! I'm not a COMPLETE moron!" Sadly, some students don't get such a great opportunity. I wonder where I'd be if nobody ever ended up believing in me.

If I were a betting man, I'd wager this kid turns out to be more successful than the angry woman calling her "dumb."

Also, if anybody reading this is a high school senior or junior still looking at applying to schools, give my alma mater WJU a look! It's one of the greatest places in the world.

NHL Trade Deadline

Tomorrow afternoon is the big NHL trade deadline, and those who follow hockey are well aware of how hectic the night before can be. Here's a cool site which seems to be a great place to check out the transactions. It's generally updated quite promptly.

I wonder if the Caps will do anything! It'd be nice if they got an offensive-minded center to fill the void left by Michael Nylander's injury...but I'm sure whatever GM George McPhee chooses will be great!

Can't help but feel bad for Tony Stewart, who switched lanes while leading to go with his teammate. But you also couldn't help but feel good for Kurt Busch, who pushed his Penske teammate Ryan Newman past Stewart (who punched him earlier in the week, allegedly) for the victory. Good ol' NASCAR...

Good to see the Caps get a regulation win against a division opponent last night. It was unfortunate we had dropped the last few.

I thought Sami Lepisto, who was playing in his first ever NHL game, looked good. He looked pretty confident. While we didn't get to see him make an impact on the score sheet, he also wasn't on the ice for either Tampa Bay goal...so that's good!

Okay, back to watching the Daytona 500...

Both races should be very interesting to watch. With everything we've seen so far this election year, I don't think any outcome can be predicted with any certainty.

On a related note, I saw this article today about a 21 year old superdelegate who was recently taken to breakfast by Chelsea Clinton, and receives many calls on behalf of Clinton and Obama. Can you imagine being a college junior and getting persuasive phone calls from a former President?? How does that even happen!

Mike Green is the "Real Deal"

Mike Green is the real deal, and don't let anybody tell you otherwise.

His overtime goal in yesterday's game was his third game-winner of the season and 15th goal overall (leading all defensemen). He logs more and more ice time each night, sometimes over half the game.

Mike Green deserves to be seriously considered for the Norris Trophy this year, but it seems few others are giving him the credit he truly deserves.

Caps owner Ted Leonsis actually had a neat stat on his blog today--Mike Green has scored as many goals as Jaromir Jagr so far this season.

Let it be known throughout the land!

Mike Green shall now be referred to as Mike "Real Deal" Green!

My friend Matt was the first person I heard apply that nickname, and I like it. Perhaps now the doubters will be forced to give him more credit.

Woo! I had to post this before tonight's games, since Atlanta or Florida may (temporarily!) usurp the Caps' position in the NHL standings...but, woo!!

The media hasn't given the Caps the respect they deserve, even as they climbed from the bottom of the NHL standings to division leaders...but I suspect they'll receive all the respect in the world once they make the playoffs and start to make some noise (the Caps are 20-10-4 since hiring new head coach Bruce Boudreau). Also, I can't remember the exact statistic, but I think Alex Ovechkin has scored A BAGILLION goals during that stretch.

I think you could effectively sum up any part of tonight's game with the following phrase: "Are you kidding me?"

It could have been uttered after Nash's 3-on-5 breakaway. It could have been said after the referee tripped up Morrisonn on the goal that put Columbus up by one in the third. And it definitely could have been yelled in disbelief as Alex Ovechkin scored his second of the night in game-winning overtime fashion.

I couldn't help but feel bad for the referee, Bill McCreary, he certainly didn't mean it. But, boy, what a tough break for Morrisonn. It's tough to defend against Rick Nash and even tougher to do so with an injured foot....let alone having to do so with an injured foot and a REFEREE TACKLING YOU!! Still, just one of those tough breaks....McCreary seems like a great referee from what I've seen.

The Caps definitely deserved the two points tonight, and it would have been a shame if they left with anything less. Congrats to the team on a spectacular effort--this fan certainly appreciated it!
